HISTORY | ||
Born in the highlands, Alicia Quantrell was the only daughter of a farmer and his baker wife. Like many young superhumans, she grew up in a tight-knit community that rarely ventured outside of their own kind and her parents used their skills to lead an abundant life - one that seemed almost too good to be true. You see, Alicia's father was where she inherited her ability of mind control, and he wasn't shy about using it to suggest things. Slightly overripe fruit was perfect, his chickens' eggs were never small and always a bargain for their quality. She spent her childhood learning that her life could be very easy with liberal use of her power. She also spent a significant portion of it learning about the mythology behind her people, a part of her childhood she wouldn't let go and would - in fact - cultivate into a passion. A passion that - once she left school at eighteen - saw her joining a government department only known as The Agency. Julia Rosenberg wanted her as soon as she learned about her power, about her ambition. Alicia started out as a research assistant - someone who worked in the labs and learned about the inner workings of Creatures and their powers, who helped with experiments and research. She usually used her powers to keep subjects subdued. It bored her to tears, despite the interesting topic. There was little in the way of advancement opportunity without visiting university for further education and that seemed like a waste of time when she was already in the job. So - after a bit of talking - she convinced (without any mind control, thanks) Rosenberg to shift her to Field Work, where she learned to fight and was stellar at it. To this day, she's near universally considered the best fighter among the field agents when powers are taken out of the equation. Field work was also how she met Diana - a beautiful, willowy woman with the power of precognition and a tendency to value practicality over style. How they ever hooked up is a mystery to most of The Agency, but Diana's endless patience and soft-spoken, effortless handling of nearly any situation had Alicia hooked on her, enough to eventually ask her out. (They've been together ever since.) After a few years in the field, Alicia and Diana were paired with a new couple of kids - seventeen year old Marc and Kate - and tasked with inducting and training them. Despite differences in their fighting styles - and, really, general personalities -, Kate and Alicia quickly found commonalities in their natural inclination towards combat and tendency to find similar things a waste of time. Alicia helped Kate devise combat strategies that let her end things quickly and without bloodshed, and the four became quite close to one another. They also introduced the new kids to Jay and Carl, who were occasionally called on to help with undercover work. While Marc and Jay hit it off spectacularly, Kate and Carl were far more of a mess. After a while, Kate and Marc moved into another part of field work and Alicia and Diana continued with their intelligence gathering specialty. Most of this time was - for Alicia - unmemorable. With nothing but good results and the favour of Rosenberg, who seemed to consider Alicia a contender for her successor. Then Kate and Marc were tasked with finding a rare superhuman, a phoenix named Faith. And Rosenberg's plan crumbled. Really, none of it was intentional. But Alicia had spent too many years looking into the mythology of their people, and Faith was just too... bright. Too inspiring. Too easy to follow. Diana was easily swayed, and Alicia - despite her relatively cushy position and consideration for next Agency head - began to see the possibility of something more. A less demanding job, for one. A chance to be a kingmaker, rather than the king. While both positions appealed, the backseat control - the place where she could make best, most subtle use of her power - appealed more. She agreed to follow Faith, to wrest control from Rosenberg instead of waiting for the woman to eventually die or grow bored (and Alicia suspected the former would happen far before the latter). She agreed, in part, in the hopes that she'd be able to secure Rosenberg's power and use it. (That, unfortunately, never happened.) At the Manchester debacle, it was Alicia who was responsible for stabbing Rosenberg in the back, ultimately killing her. |

PERSONALITY | ||
If Faith says We can do this, to make things better; Kate will say We have to do this, or no one else will- Alicia? She says I want to do this. For me. A Harry Potter fan might call Alicia a quintessential Slytherin. Ambition and underhandedness has followed her throughout her life, and while she does good things, she largely does them because they seem to provide the most benefit to her. Had she not seen Faith as a potential way to move Rosenberg out of the way faster, or someone she could exert more influence over, Alicia would have been quite happy to bide her time and secure her place as next Agency head. But Faith seemed far more convenient. She does not broadcast these decisions - as a matter of fact, most people would see Alicia as someone who is bright - both in personality and intelligence -, prone to sarcasm, and devoted to her friends. All of these are, in their own way, also true. Despite her own ambitions, Alicia truly does care for the people surrounding her, and will wait out a situation until she can find a solution to the problem that allows them all to get a good outcome. Because, if anything, Alicia is incredibly patient when it comes to her goals. She doesn't like to dive in without thinking things over and determining the consequences of her actions if she can help it. (And keeping people on your good side? Is certainly the most favourable outcome, even if she can manipulate it easily.) People would probably call Alicia a kingmaker, even before the decision to ally with Faith. She seems to have a knack for getting into positions where she can make those sorts of calls. It is, in fact, a very deliberate skill. She grew up seeing how indispensable her parents were to the community and followed in their footsteps, because the life she grew up with was cushy and worth it. Despite her useful power, and despite seeing how her father wielded it, Alicia tends to refrain from using it when not necessary. It isn't due to distaste, but simply pragmatism. It is better to convince people that they want you on their side without a force that can easily be broken or fade away. An intelligent girl even without a university education, Alicia enjoys learning in her spare time and is fascinated by the mythology and stories that surround her people. It was even part of how she and Diana initially bonded - they both have interest in the stories around their people and spend a lot of their time even now, simply reading books and blogs together and discussing what they learned. It shows in her tendency to dig for information, and she's not shy about throwing the punches she needs to in order to get the gossip she might be able to use against a person. Unless that person is Diana. Diana is Alicia's real weak spot, and the one person she tries to avoid manipulating under any circumstance (except, maybe, the odd consideration of mind controlling her to believe that she didn't break important, expensive vases). Even as much as she respects Faith, or likes Kate and the others - they're all people she would still use if necessary. But not Diana. Diana, if anything, is the one in control in their relationship, and Alicia wants to make her happy more than most other things in the world. |
